Vatana Watters started this house in Dallas in 1986 for a plain reason: bridal had gone cookie cutter, so she made dresses for her friends instead, and the reaction told her the rest. Forty years on she still applies one test, and she states it without hedging — if you cannot move, dance, sit, and breathe in it, it is not there yet. The corollary is the part you can see: even the drama earns its spot. Volume, texture, and beading go where they buy something and nowhere else. It is why these gowns photograph as dramatic and still make sense at eleven at night.
Locket, and why it is called that
Locket is the Watters bridal line, renamed not long ago from Wtoo. The name came out of a conversation between Vatana and her daughter Sydney, who directs the brand’s style and grew up in the Dallas atelier. A locket does not display what matters to you; it holds it, close and safe. They decided that was what the dresses had been doing all along: small treasure boxes, wrapped in something modern. The bride they design it for, in Vatana’s own words, is confident, modern, and a little spicy.
What the collection looks like
Every silhouette is here — beaded sheath shapes, sculpted mermaid lines, soft A-line skirts, full ball gowns — along with draped satin bodices, illusion lace, layered tulle, sculpted florals that are bold rather than sweet, and cathedral trains. The beading is worked the way Texas uses its sky: big, and difficult to ignore. Several styles carry detachable sleeves, and some an overskirt that lifts away for the reception.
What effortless actually costs
A gown that looks unstudied is engineered to look that way. Soft fabric has nothing to hide behind: it goes exactly where the seam sends it, and half an inch out reads as a dress that does not quite fit rather than a dress that drapes. Designer options versus in-house alterations
Two different things get called personalization. Designer-ordered options are chosen when you purchase your gown, and with this house the list is short — extra length is the one brides use most, so a gown can be ordered longer than standard rather than hemmed up from it. What else a particular style allows is worth asking about, and your consultant checks it with the designer at the time you purchase. In-house alterations are ours once the gown is here: the fit, the hem, the drape settled onto you. Either way, the gown is ordered in a standard size from Watters’ own size chart and fitted to you in-house, never made to your exact measurements.
What brides ask about Watters
Is Locket the same thing as Wtoo?
Yes. Wtoo was renamed Locket, and it is the Watters bridal collection we carry. The gowns did not change, the name did — so if you have a Wtoo style saved from a year or two ago, bring it in and we will find out whether it is still available.
Are Watters gowns made to my measurements?
No. We measure your bust, waist, and hip, order the size that best fits your largest measurement from Watters’ own size chart, and our master seamstresses complete the fit in-house. A gown drawn and built from scratch is a separate service, and one we also offer.
Is Watters good for a destination or beach wedding?
It is one of the natural choices. The fabrics are lighter, the silhouettes move, and the aesthetic sits comfortably on a beach, in a garden, or in a vineyard. Nothing about one of these gowns looks stranded away from a cathedral.
Can a soft, unstructured gown still be altered to fit me?
Yes, and it matters more here than on a structured gown, because soft fabric shows a poor fit immediately. That is the work: refining the drape until it falls correctly on you rather than approximately on you.
